{"id":545,"date":"2004-06-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-06-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php\/2004\/06\/25\/mac-os-x-security-myth-exposed\/"},"modified":"2021-12-30T11:37:38","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T11:37:38","slug":"mac-os-x-security-myth-exposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/?p=545","title":{"rendered":"Mac OS X security myth exposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That is according to statistics published for the first time this week by Danish security firm Secunia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The stats, based on a database of security advisories for more than 3,500 products during 2003 and 2004 sheds light on the real security of enterprise applications and operating systems, according to the firm.<\/p>\n<p>One thing the hard figures have shown is that OS X&#8217;s reputation as a relatively secure operating system is unwarranted, Secunia said.<\/p>\n<p>This year and last year Secunia tallied 36 advisories on security issues with the software, many of them allowing attackers to remotely take over the system &#8212; comparable to figures on operating systems such as Windows XP Professional and Red Hat Enterprise Server.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Secunia is now displaying security statistics that will open many eyes, and for some it might be very disturbing news,&#8221; said Secunia chief executive Niels Henrik Rasmussen.<\/p>\n<p>A few other organizations maintain comparable lists, including the Open Source Vulnerability Database (OSVDB) and the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database, which provides common names for publicly known vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Windows XP Professional saw 46 advisories in 2003-2004, with 48 percent of vulnerabilities allowing remote attacks and 46 percent enabling system access, Secunia said.<\/p>\n<p>Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 8 had 48 advisories in the same period, with 58 percent of the holes exploitable remotely and 37 percent enabling system access.<\/p>\n<p>A recent Forrester Research Inc. study comparing Windows and Linux vendor response times on security flaws was heavily criticized for its conclusion that Linux vendors took longer to release patches.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.computerworld.com.au\/index.php\/id;1870365808;fp;16;fpid;0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[29],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-545","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/545","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=545"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/545\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3032,"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/545\/revisions\/3032"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=545"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=545"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cybersecurityinstitute.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=545"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
