[From the desk of Paul Davis – his opinions and no-one else’s]
Apart from the reporter’s opinions 😉
So onto the news:

India worst hit by malware attacks: Report
The report by software security major Trend Micro says India, which faced 16 percent of the total attacks, is followed by Egypt and Iran at 11 percent each.
Pakistan, Taiwan and the US take the third spot with seven percent.
“In the second quarter, we saw a shift in the threat landscape with cyber criminals becoming more sophisticated and creative, amplifying existing methods of attack, and using them in new ways,” said Myla V.
Pilao, director of TrendLabs marketing communications under Trend Micro.
According to the report, the total number of malware detections across the Asia Pacific region in the second quarter of 2015 was at nearly 118 million.

EU-U.S. Agreement on Personal-Data Protections Reached
BRUSSELS—U.S. and European Union officials have reached agreement on a set of protections for personal data, which should allow for expanded data sharing in counterterrorism investigations.
Under the agreement, the U.S. will have to publish how long it will confidentially hold personal data.
It prohibits them from being retained indefinitely.
The agreement says that EU and U.S. will need to create a mechanism if a data breach exposes personal data.
The agreement is separate from other ongoing talks between the U.S. and the EU to update a pact used by Google and other U.S. companies that allows them to transfer personal data to U.S.-based servers.

Gemalto Releases Findings of First Half 2015 Breach Level Index
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 9, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, today released the findings of the Breach Level Index for the first six months of 2015, revealing that 888 data breaches occurred, compromising 246 million records worldwide.

Compared to the first half of 2014, data breaches increased by 10% while the number of compromised data records declined by 41% during the first six months of this year.
This decline in compromised records can most likely be attributed to that fact that fewer large scale mega breaches have occurred in the retail industry compared to the same period last year.
he number of state-sponsored attacks accounted for just 2% of data breach incidents, but the number of records compromised as a result of those attacks totalled 41% of all records exposed, due to the breaches at Anthem Insurance and the U.S.
Office of Personnel Management.
While none of the top 10 breaches from first half of 2014 were caused by state-sponsored attacks, three of the top ten this year were state sponsored—including the top two.
Five of the top ten breaches, including the top three – which were all classified as Catastrophic on the BLI – were identity theft breaches, down from seven of the top 10 from the same period last year.

87% of Mexican and 69% of Brazilian IT Decision Makers Say Their Organization Is Vulnerable to Insider Threats
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Vormetric, a leader in enterprise data security for physical, virtual, big data, public, private and hybrid cloud environments, today announced the results of its Mexico and Brazil-focused edition of the 2015 Vormetric Insider Threat Report (ITR).
The survey was conducted online by Harris Poll in spring 2015 on behalf of Vormetric, and collected responses from 204 IT decision makers, with 102 respondents from Mexico and 102 from Brazil.
Survey results are also compared with those collected by Harris Poll in fall 2014 among 818 IT decision makers (ITDMs) in various countries.
This report extends and compares earlier findings in the global report, the European edition as well as the Japan and ASEAN edition.
The Mexico and Brazil report reveals findings about how these countries perceive security threats, the types of employees considered most dangerous, environments at the greatest risk for data loss and the steps organizations are taking to secure data.
“Organizations that place a priority on increasing data-at-rest defenses such as those in Brazil (67 percent), Mexico (49 percent) and the U.S. (49 percent) will be much better prepared to protect data against attacks,” said vice president of Latin America at Vormetric, Roman Baudrit. “Surprisingly, Brazilian respondents also reported much lower levels of failing data breaches and compliance audits (26 percent) than their counterparts in Mexico (48 percent), even though they are planning higher levels of investment in data security – Brazil (72 percent) and Mexico (55 percent).”
