Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
Samuel Axon
Ars Technica
On LinkedIn, operating system engineering director Mark Lucovsky announced that he has joined Google.
He previously headed up mixed reality operating system work for Meta, and before that he was one of the key architects of Windows NT at Microsoft. “My role is to lead the Operating System team for Augmented Reality at Google,” he wrote.
Other job listings say new hires will be working on an “innovative AR device.” And one specifies that Google is “focused on making immersive computing accessible to billions of people through mobile devices.”

Boeing wants to build its next airplane in the ‘metaverse’

SEATTLE — In Boeing Co.’s factory of the future, immersive 3-D engineering designs will be twinned with robots that speak to each other, while mechanics around the world will be linked by $3,500 HoloLens headsets made by Microsoft Corp.
It is a snapshot of an ambitious new Boeing strategy to unify sprawling design, production and airline services operations under a single digital ecosystem — in as little as two years.
Like Airbus, Boeing’s holy grail for its next new aircraft is to build and link virtual three-dimensional “digital twin” replicas of the jet and the production system able to run simulations.
More than 70% of quality issues at Boeing trace back to some kind of design issue, Hyslop said.
Boeing believes such tools will be central to bringing a new aircraft from inception to market in as little as four or five years.

Solotech Acquires XR Studios To Expand Virtual Production Services
Pro Sound Web
Solotech president and CEO Martin Tremblay announced that the company has acquired XR Studios, a Los Angeles-based agency specializing in extended reality that’s comprised of augmented reality technology for live broadcast and virtual productions.
As part of the strategic plan, XR Studios will continue to operate as a separate entity and brand.
With the acquisition, Solotech’s recently created Media and Entertainment Technology (MET) Division will make another step towards realizing its vision of developing new technologies that are at the crossroads of fans and artists, content producers, and online gamers.
Solotech saw the increasing need for live streaming services and virtual production and adapted its offering to support its clients and create new opportunities.
The acquisition of XR Studios also brings new talent and chief technical officer Scott Millar onboard, who’s worked on multiple, large scale international AR projects with a focus on installation, engineering, and general AV technology.
He’s been instrumental in the founding of the extended reality workflow, collaborating with software teams such as disguise, Notch, Unreal Engine, and Touch Designer, making Millar a vital expert of this technology.

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a $5.8 million contract to the Paolo Alto Research Center (PARC) to collaborate with several key universities to develop augmented reality (AR) technologies, it was announced on Thursday.
The Xerox company will work on projects with AR firm Patched Reality as well as two institutions—the University of California at Santa Barbara and the University of Rostock—to build artificial intelligence systems designed for completing complex tasks greater than a workforce’s capacity, the company said.
The new Autonomous Multimodal Ingestion for Goal Oriented Support (AMIGOS) for DARPA’s Perceptually-enabled Task Guidance programme is an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to execute tasks such as converting text and video manuals to instruct users with AR solutions as well as monitor tasks.
According to the company, DARPA will receive an offline system for learning using multiple sources such as visual and language data to extract information used to complete tasks and create content.
