Network Access Heats Up With 802.1x Funk

Posted on July 17, 2006December 30, 2021 by admini

Juniper’s latest release hits the market as its chief rival, Cisco Systems (Quote, Chart) ramps up its own technology and acquisitions in the increasingly competitive 802.1x and network access control space.
The 802.1x protocol is widely considered the standard in the nascent network access control market.

Both SteelBelt Radius and OAC were available prior to Juniper’s Funk acquisition but have been upgraded.

Earlier this month, Cisco helped itself to a new 802.1x supplicant with the acquisition of Meetinghouse Data Communications for $43.7 million, which is seen as filling out its NAC product lines.

“We know we want the standalone market and we’re going squarely after the endpoint integrity market,” Tavakoli said. “And if we ultimately lose some business because we’re not going to go out of our way to add proprietary features to Radius and Odyssey that basically support proprietary architectures by Cisco, so be it,” he said.

Cisco’s NAC and 802.1x efforts aren’t the only potential competition that Juniper faces in this space.

“We are confident in the feature gap between what will ship in Vista and what we have in Odyssey Access Client and that we will continue to be head and shoulders above.

Cisco to Buy Meetinghouse

Posted on July 6, 2006December 30, 2021 by admini

When integrated with Cisco’s existing security portfolio, Meetinghouse’s AEGIS SecureConnect products will enable Cisco to provide a single unified wired and wireless client to enterprise customers that will help them reduce operational costs by simplifying the security management of a broad array of host devices and operating systems.

“The Meetinghouse software supplicant is a natural extension to existing Cisco initiatives such as the Cisco Self Defending Network via Network Admission Control (NAC) and the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) program.”

EMC Acquires RSA

Posted on June 29, 2006December 30, 2021 by admini

EMC is 100% committed to applying the resources required to continue to expand RSA’s leading market share while also tightly integrating their technology with EMC’s products to bring customers the best information-centric security portfolio available.”

Tucci said on the call that “the technology company that seamlessly integrates information storage with information management with information protection with information security, and centrally manages and orchestrates this information infrastructure, will be a huge winner in the technology marketplace, and the technology company that’s going to do that is EMC.”

RSA CEO and President Art Coviello said in a statement, “Information security threats are evolving from attacks on the network and the perimeter to attacks on the data itself. For this reason, security must be an integral part of the information infrastructure, transparently allowing authorized users to easily get access to information.”

Greg Schulz, founder and senior analyst at StorageIO, said the acquisition “makes sense to complement the existing EMC information and data management solution lineup and to address holistic data protection and security.”

Upon completion of the acquisition, RSA will operate as EMC’s Information Security Division, headquartered in Bedford, Mass. Coviello will become an Executive Vice President of EMC and President of the division.
